Without the added mess, the mod is just new technology crammed into an old game, which is wholly uninteresting. With all the mess turned out, it creates a new look for Half-Life, which I can see as a new experience, which is what it needs to be. But you really should turn on the optional CRT filter, which absolutely trashes the game to look a bit like it's running on an old rubbish low-resolution monitor. It also has aggressive bloom and dirty lens effects, also on by default. Half-Life: Ray Traced disables texture filtering by result, giving the look of playing in software mode back before you got a 3D graphics card. Where once I was in awe of scripted sequences, now I'm delighted by a spinning fan casting shadows down a dingy blue maintenance corridor. The impact of the new high-tech lighting is amplified by being in such dramatic contrast to the low-tech murk and mire. It also captures another ancient Half-Life feeling, the memory of being wowed by technology. It looks not like Half-Life, but like memories of imagining how amazing Half-Life must be after seeing tiny screenshots printed in magazines or sloppy clips broadcast on analogue TV. The colours are trashed, details are obscured, and brightness can be all over the place. You can even see Gordon reflected in Barney's shiny helmetĪt its best, the Ray Traced mod is dirty and murky and grubby and pixellated. I like this mod's unusual approach to that problem. They might bring higher pixel density, polycounts, and other big numbers, but they typically break a game's style and make it look unlike itself (the phenomonal Resident Evil 4 HD Project is a rare exception). Post-processing shader tools which just agh. Raytracing mods which make every surface gleam. New models which replace charm with 'realism' or turn Alyx Vance into some sort of Leather Goddess Of Phobos. HD texture packs which overwrite intentful and suggestive detail with high-def noise. I dislike most modern makeover mods for old games. It's not the fanciest or most realistic raytracing, but it has a clear effect. Light fills rooms, niches are appropriately shadowy, spinning fan blades and grates cast exciting shadows, glass refracts objects behind it, god rays beam down, signs and slimes glow, reflections capture everything around them (including Gordon himself), our boy casts his own full-body shadow, a few areas have added dramatic lighting, and so on. This fancies up the game's lighting with more dynamic shadows and reflections, volumetric lighting, and all that. The Half-Life: Ray Traced mod builds upon Xash3D FWGS, an open-source replacement engine, by adding real-time path tracing. If you can't wear a ring of damage without being too slow and you aren't wearing either Fingolfin or Cambeleg, then Sting, Dagmor, and the extra attacks ego weapons will be correspondingly less attractive. The ridiculous amount of off-weapon +damage this character is wielding also tilts things a bit towards +blows weapons. For a warrior, Sting will drop behind Thunderfist, Aglarang will drop three places behind Crisdurian, while Dagmor drops behind Eowyn and Ulmo. But for a mage Sting will do more damage than Aiglos or Eorlingas, and Aglarang and Dagmor will come right after Eorlingas. So +blows matters more to a mage than to a warrior.Ĭlass will have zero effect on the comparison between Ringil and Pain. It must be something you reference all day every day otherwise, it won’t be helpful. Use your cell phone calendar or write it down the old fashioned way on a calendar or planner you look at every day. Now you’ve done all that planning and need a system to remember it all. The easiest way to do this without doing quick math in your brain, is to use a spreadsheet like the one we offer below for free! Working backwards in your calculations is helpful. See if there’s enough time in your growing season to get planted before the fall frost. You need to know the growing time required for that other plant. Make use of empty spaces! For example, you’ve harvested all your lettuce and want to plant something else in its place. Now you can plan out the second and even third round of planting for a nice harvest all season long. You’ve listed out the dates for your first round. While this may seem like a real pain, it’s quite necessary as you’ll see in our garden plan revisions. Read seed packets or reference Johnny’s or High Mowing to see the specifics growing needs of each plant. Note: This all assumes you’re not using season extenders to plant early or later in the season. Use the days to maturity for plants and their ideal growing temperatures to determine planting schedules. Feelings: What were you thinking and feeling?ģ. Professor Graham Gibbs created a model for personal reflection called the “Reflective Cycle.” His chart includes:Ģ. Why bother remembering something so difficult? Those of us who have lived through 2020 may also benefit in the future from instituting a similar Feast of Shelters to reflect each year on what we learned when the threat of sickness and our shuttered doors forced us to educate our children at home and erase every plan from our calendars.Įxperts agree that reflection is an essential practice for those desiring a vibrant interior life. Other versions of the Bible translate the word “booth” as “shelter.”Īfter their experience of lostness and despair, they continued to celebrate the Feast of Shelters even after they were safe, secure and settled back in their own land. They wanted to remember their years of wandering in the desert when the temple of God was a temporary structure called a tabernacle. In ancient history, the Hebrews celebrated a festival called the Feast of Booths. Studies show that reflecting on past experiences aid more in learning and personal growth than shoring up new knowledge. When I was a teacher, I often assigned “reflections” to my middle school students after field trips, science experiments, or completing a novel as a way of shifting lived knowledge into their longer term memory. Poet and novelist May Sarton wrote in her published journals, “friends, even passionate love, are not my real life unless there is time alone in which to explore and to discover what is happening or has happened.” One man in hospice said cancer eventually led him to transform neutral moments in life into meaningful ones.Įducational reformer John Dewey once wrote that we “we do not learn from experience … we learn from reflecting on experience.” Teachers, spiritual leaders, athletes, business professionals, poets, and scientists already know the value of self-reflection. But we can easily miss the chance to extract meaning from our conflict and questions if we don’t stop and reflect. Intense life experiences illuminate the essential and dim the superficial. Joe later writes to Kathleen: “There was a man sitting in the elevator with me who knew exactly what he wanted, and I found myself wishing I were as lucky as he.” When Joe’s girlfriend interrupts his heart-felt survival wish to blurt out that she’s getting her eyes lasered when she gets out, Joe realizes he’s with the wrong woman. I don’t know what’s been stopping me,” says the elevator attendant. “I’m gonna start speaking to my mama,” one woman says. Remember that elevator scene from You’ve Got Mail? The one where Joe Fox, acted by Tom Hanks, and his girlfriend get stuck in an elevator with two other people and they each tell what they’ll do “if I ever get out of here.” I keep thinking about that scene. There is even a red color for the clock face to use for a time-out or you could use it for time-in and talk about emotions. I push the green button on top of the clock once and then hold it down and the clock face turns green for the amount of time you choose. They call the green color “encouragement,” we use this for quiet time. Want to use it for naptime as well? There is a light blue color that can be set for the number of hours and minutes you choose. Set the clock for bedtime and the clock face turns dark blue. The default daytime color is a yellow clock face. The My Tot clock has five color settings. It has both the analog clock face and a digital display of the time and it was the easiest of the three to set. The buttons for setting the clock are under the removable faceplate that my son has never thought to take off (just don’t set it in front of your child if you have a button pusher!). This is a clock that is made to be handled by kids. Just when I was thinking perhaps I should start a business to design the best kid’s clock, I finally found it! This clock was more expensive than the other two and more than I wanted to spend initially, but in the end, it does have several more features than the other two. There is even a reviewer who has figured out how to turn all the lights out at night but still have the green come on in the morning by taking the clock apart and adjusting something on the electronic board inside! That was too much for me and we returned it pretty quickly. Some have figured out how to only have the green light come on in the morning, but the feet are still lit up at night. There are several reviews dedicated to showing how to turn off the light on Amazon. Second, while the controls are under a panel and in the back, it is very obvious that there is a panel and my son quickly saw that there were lots of fun buttons on the back of the clock.įinally, the night light on this clock is VERY bright. You can’t have a separate nap time without resetting the whole thing. First, you still can only set one wake up time. However, there were several problems with this clock. The clock yellow at night when it is time to sleep and changes to green in the morning when it is time to wake up. It was easier to set the wake-up time on this one as well. I think all of these cues would be great to help children learn how to tell time. In addition, when your child pushes on one of the large buttons in the front it would say the time out loud. It has both analog and digital time displays like the first clock. Again, there were several things I liked about this clock. Patch Products LLC Teach Me Time Talking Alarm Clock and Nightlightįor the second clock, I thought I would go with something more simple. A big red button and fun dials, what child wouldn’t want to play with those? Just as soon as we would finally get it set, my son would turn a dial and all was lost. The only solution would be to put it out of reach, which didn’t feel like a great solution. The biggest problem for us was that all of the controls were right on the back of the clock. I am not sure if we simply had too much trouble setting it, but the “wake up” and “bedtime” light did not always switch when it should. Also, there is no way to have a different bedtime and wake up time. But it is difficult to get it exactly on 7:30. The mechanism to do this is to turn a dial on the analog part of the clock to the time you want, for example, 7:30. It was difficult to set accurately because how you set the sleep/wake up times. This is a feature that could be useful in teaching children how to tell time. The other feature I liked about this was that it has a digital clock beneath the analog clock. When it is time to wake up, the light glows on the top part of the picture where the child is playing and when it is time to go to sleep the light glows on the bottom part of the picture where the child is sleeping. First of all, it is really cute and I liked that the visual cue was a child sleeping for nighttime and a child playing for daytime. I liked several features about this clock. The links below are Amazon affiliate links which help to support this blog with no extra cost to you. This is not a sponsored post, this is simply my experience with ordering (and returning 2 of the 3!) three clocks and my honest opinion on each one. ‘When to Wake’ clocks give children visual cues that are a helpful aid when creating sleep routines for children. With young children, we don’t usually want an alarm to wake them up but rather a cue to keep them in bed until it is time to wake up. The victories he achieved by meticulous study of his enemies started the Chapter's obsession on gathering and guarding information. Azariah rose to leadership and saved the Chapter from the brink of extinction. Azariah was an exceptional Psyker who was serving as Master of the Librarium during a campaign which saw both the Chapter Master and the Master of Sanctity dead, with the Chapter suffering heavy casualties. The first recorded Chapter Master, however, was Azariah Vidya, the first Blood Raven known to have combined the roles of Chapter Master and Chief Librarian. One who has been named was Alexian, whose name is found on many wargear items in Dawn of War games. In the (canon) Space Marine ending of Dark Crusade, Captain Davian Thule was said to have found artifacts that provide insight to their heraldry, yet he destroyed these artifacts before they could be taken back to the Litany of Fury, implying a shameful secret that could be damning to the chapter.Įarly stories of uncertain authenticity mention four great heroes and leaders of the Chapter. Both chapters have a large number of psykers, as well as a similar color pattern between Blood Ravens and pre-Heresy Thousand Sons. Or that they could be the new legion that the Emperor planned on giving to Magnus without the genetic flaws. As the fleet-based marines of the Thousand Sons were not present for the burning of their homeworld Prospero and thus were not transported to the Eye of Terror, their fate remains unknown. Some speculate that the Blood Ravens are loyalist descendents of the Thousand Sons. Attempts to link them with the Blood Angels and Raven Guard seem to be due to similarities in their names and heraldy, but the Chapter suffers neither from the Blood Angels' psychotic tendencies nor have the pale skin and black eyes and hair of the Raven Guard. There is much speculation as to which First Founding Legion the Blood Ravens actually descend from. The date and purpose of their founding is unknown but it is speculated that it may have been to confront a specific threat that is now dispatched or in a period of great upheaval in the Imperium that has since been forgotten, or redacted. The Blood Ravens have no knowledge of their original founding Chapter, Legion, and Primarch. There is a minor mutation in the stage 6 implant (the catalepsian node, a brain implant controlling the Marine's circadian rhythm and sleep functions) of Blood Ravens that results in eidetic memory and inability to experience REM sleep. This high frequency of psykers has resulted in increased testing of the Blood Ravens genetic material that is submitted to the Adeptus Mechanicus, but all tests have found their geneseed to be stable with no aberrations. On the surface, the Blood Ravens are a relatively unremarkable Chapter, organized according to the standards set out by the Codex Astartes with little apparent deviation, although they have an unusually high number of Librarians. |
